It is comical to see people scurrying about trying to cast Oracle as some
kind of inept predator and hinting darkly about lack of information beyond
Oracle's general statements regarding improved support and lower costs. The
same is true of Novell's agreements with Microsoft. Just as support by IBM
started Linux on a path to success in the server arena, Oracle's backing
will serve to strengthen the image of Linux as a world class product.
Successful computer software businesses are never going to be small or
medium size. It takes a multi-billion dollar company such as Oracle to give
commercial customers confidence in the future. Red Hat should continue to
worry and should perhaps even accelerate that worry.
