I was aware of Rhino. I meant that Sun had no official stance on
JavaScript (just like they have no official stance of Perl, LISP, or any
other programming language), and that this stance has not changed between
the release of 1.5 and 1.6.

Well, Rhino is an mozilla project, as can be seen by the URL above, and
so it's already open source. As for Java itself, Sun said they'd finish
releasing everything by mid-2007.

From what I read (e.g.
http://www.internetnews.com/bus-news/article.php/3647781), it's only rumours
which say that Graham left Sun due to the GPL thing. Neither Sun nor Graham
have made an official statement on the matter. (If you've heard differently,
let me know). Personally, I'm skeptical. Making Java GPL seems like a pretty
silly reason to quit your job to me. While it may have contributed to
Graham's decision, I suspect there were probably other factors, and the GPL
thing was just another straw on the camel's back (and not nescessarily the
one which broke said back).
