What I personally chose to do is to install all the multimedia packages (an
overkill) for MP3 support and then used AmaroK and Kaffeine (for video). I
gave up on XMMS instantly, having explored AmaroK for a few minutes.
Kaffeine handles MPEG and AVI (most codecs) absolutely fine 'out of the box'
(SuSE 9.3). Microsoft formats are the only hindrance, which require
installation of some extra package. Use the following as a reference:
