Some used to use emacs as a shell, because you can do everything from in
there anyway, plus many of the standard commands have an output
specifically for input to emacs (such as 'ls'). Like doing a single top
straight into a text editor where you can view it, or the response from a
find command.

As it happens I looked for the 'top' option in response to a question about
this just to use as an example, but the emacs output has been dropped, so I
looked at a few more and it seems to be getting dropped from many of them
now.

But then I suppose with redirection to more popular editors it probably
isn't worth their while to carry on supporting it.
