Some time in December 2004 (or January 2005) there was a press conference, or
perhaps a meetup with MSFT investors. One guy in the audience asked Ballmer
something along the lines of "but what about Linux?". Ballmer laughed like a
little girl and by doing just that (the "*ridicule*, then fight, then lose"
phrase springs to mine), he spread FUD. So, indeed as you say, there is an
attempt the mask the truth.
Ballmer once said about Linux (in a similar scenario) "are you going to trust
some guy from China?". Given _OPEN SOURCE_ projects like Apache, I would
never choose to trust "some programmer from Redmond". They sweep everything
under the carpet and it shows (a DDOS vulnerability in Windows was announced
today). I can recall a certain blunder back in 1997-ish when the
spellchecker in Office corrected "I want to kill Bill Gates" with "I'll
drink to that". Mischievous programmers are harboured by closed-source
development models.
Anyhoo, I drift off topic again...
Best wishes,
Roy
