I suspect not. Kubuntu is (was) a fairly independent project, much like
nUbuntu is at the moment (like Goobuntu, unlike Xubuntu, Edubuntu, and
various server/business editions). About a month ago, Mark Shuttleworth, the
man who founded and funds Ubuntu, announced that they would get closer to
the rather isolated and neglected Kubuntu and Xubuntu (xfce-based, just to
clarify) teams [1]. All in all, there is still some fragmentation, which I
suppose answers the question is less of a long-winded way. *smile*

LinuxTag: Ubuntu offers three desktops

,----[ Quote ]
| In his keynote address at the LinuxTag conference, Ubuntu head Mark
| Shuttleworth not only spoke about his concept of Open Source software,
| but also revealed a few details about the new version of the Linux
| distribution he initiated -- "Dapper Drake" is expected to be released
| on June 1. It is expected to offer users three desktops to choose from:
| Gnome, the KDE used in Kubuntu, and Xfce in Xubuntu. The latter desktop
| is considered to have a wide range of functions and nonetheless run
| smoothly on old hardware.
|
| ...Shuttleworth said he was confident that the three certificates fort
| he corporate use of VMware, IBM DB2, and MySQL will soon follow...
|
| ...Shuttleworth currently favors Xen as the visualization technology.
|
| Shuttleworth believes the market is about to cross a threshold for
| driver support for Linux by hardware vendors. The number of Linux users,
| he claimed, will soon reach critical mass, forcing vendors who do not
| support Linux to lose revenue in the near future.
