That's one thing that makes me happy that I needed a laptop for school.  I
don't know that I want to sit down at my 'rents computer -- ever again. 
They install EVERYTHING they find, and their systems might be brand new,
but respond slower then molasses in Antarctica at the coldest tempratures
possible.  :-/

Wally World has external USB 2.0 HDDs that are inexpensive and responsive. 
You could install Linux on one of those, and use it like a LiveCD, but
faster.  Set up everything to be read-only except for /var and /home and
you should be pretty well set.  :)

I don't touch my family's computers if I can help it.  In their minds, a
virus here is there is no big deal; they just reinstall Windows every three
to six months, anyway.
