Something tells me that they use an (search) appliance for site search that
is more rapid and up-to-date. One article suggests that they use Google:

        http://searchenginewatch.com/searchday/article.php/2159851

However, this is old and I recently read a headline saying they had changed
something. I cannot recall if they altered sources or interlaced several
SERP's that they harvest. The BBC Search help facility tells very little (I
have just had a cursory look). it's actually a good questions because some
of my sites get referrals from the BBC and I try to make some sense of the
search position and search phrase when there is a recurring pattern,
indicating a valuable SERP.

Best wishes,

Roy
