This is the best quote:

	Finding a DOS successor in the early 1990s seemed a simpler task,
	he said. "Somehow, it was easier when the company was smaller
	a long time ago," Barnett said.

... this being because they were able to buy-in a design team who had
the skills to write an OS.

It's also interesting to note that the vapourware campaign has already
started, presumably in the hope that if MS can persuade enough people
that they'll create a new OS which actually works, then they won't jump
ship to the free world beforehand.  This also rather suggests that Vista
may not ever appear.

Will these tactics still work?
