The problem with this entire article is that the WinFS example doesn't
work in this case. Announcing "vapor-ware" works in the case where a
dominant force in the industry announces a spreadsheet, word processor,
compiler, web-tool, database, whatever. The whole purpose of
pre-announcing the product is to sway potential customers from buying a
competitors product and instead wait for the product that you've
announced.

How does this apply to WinFS? Are there other companies
creating/selling a WinFS equivalent? Is MS trying to convince all these
people not to buy some competing WinFS product and wait for their
implementation? AFAIK there is no other WinFS-like product out there so
who exactly are they trying to steal customers from?

Is WinFS even something that people care that much about? It would be a
nice feature but is it something that is going to make-or-break a
purchase decision? All the crazy theories aside... it's likely that
it's a project they just couldn't get working and not some elaborate
conspiracy.
