Everything you can do with existing operating systems from other vendors can
be done: Multiple virtual terminals, multiple sessions for different users
(some even connected remotely), saving of sessions, standby, hibernate,
multitasking, multithreading, alternation to priorities of processes/threads
queued to be handled. The following may remind you of a certain O/S:

As you can see (sorry about the lingual issue), users can 'swap' sessions,
among many other things. And look ma! No adverts *cough* in GDM.
