FWIW, Blender looks like a very capable application. It has good
documentation in Wikipedia:

Over at the GIMP users mailing list, I that Bender uses the GIMP (or a subset
of which) for pattern editing. It was also used to produce an Open Source
film, which had it debut last month:

It seems as though Open Source graphics are penetrating mainstream. This
brings silence to mouths of the skeptics. *smile*
