[News] Microsoft Takes Lessons from Linux, Gets Second-class Solutions

Windows PowerShell

| It's a Wrap! Windows PowerShell 1.0 Released!
|
| For those of you unfamiliar with Windows PowerShell, it is a best
| of breed next-generation commandline shell designed from the ground
| up to be flexible and powerful while still remaining easy to use.

No more ridicule of the command-line interface? Admission of a mistake? The
DOS command-line could not truly be conceded, neglected and suppressed after
all.

interview - a MAJOR vista benefit aside from DX10

,----[ Quote ]
| my system has 1.5GB ram, task manager said to the effect of:
|
| in use: 470MB
| cached: 1027MB
| free: 4MB
|
| That might look bad, but i run a linux server box, and knew this
| behaviour. Vista finally uses every bit of free ram to cache recently
| accessed files, just like the linux kernel has for years. When you need
| the ram for a running app/game, it just overwrites the cached files in
| memory. I thought great! finally get some benefit from all this ram
| other than when bf2 or fear is running.

Still, look at the resource hog.

Microsoft Windows Is A Greedy Memory Hog, The Cure Is To Feed It RAM

,----[ Quote ]
| For Windows 2000, XP, 512MB is the minimum and 1GB or more is recommended.
| For Windows 98 any flavor, 256MB is the minimum and 1GB is recommended. If
| you are an avid PC gamer or video editor, 1GB is the minimum
| recommendation. Other operating systems such as Linux or Mac are similar.
| Simply put: more is better.

Vista Runs Smooth Only on 2G Memory

,----[ Quote ]
| However, Dell CEO Kevin Rollins suggested otherwise on Thursday, 26 Oct at
| a speech at Shanghai's Jiaotong University. "I think they tell you maybe 1
| gig of memory is OK. No, two gigs of memory would be great."
|
| This echoes with my own experience with Vista RC2. With only 1G of
| RAM, there are many disk activities indicating heavy disk swap, a
| symptom of lack of memory in the system.

On the imitation and poor implementation of server software that's secure:

Server Core: Windows Without Windows

,----[ Quote ]
| Server Core also recognizes -- based on painful experience -- that
| fewer "moving parts" in an operating system equates to fewer
| vulnerabilities, stability issues and maintenance points. Reducing the
| amount of code can help reduce the amount of bugs. That's what Server
| Core is all about.

Comments:

,----
| Honestly, why are they bothering? Just install Linux minus the GUI and
| you get a far more flexible environment than this is offering. Anyone
| whose used cmd.exe knows how limited it is to, say, bash.
`----

,----
| linux/bsd are far superior to windows when it comes to servers... even
| by getting rid of the GUI msft has nothing on linux/bsd. don't even
| bother wasting your time or money.
`----

,----
| great! now, will they make a 200mb stripped down WORKSTATION???
| something that would run like DSL linux or Knoppix? i doubt it. as far as
| i am concerned, there is no reason to even mess with this if you need a
| server... go to the pawn shop and get a low heat, low power consumption
| Macintosh G3 notebook and install linux. you can do so much more with
| that and it wont make any noise in your house.
