I've seen several people in this group mention Puppy Linux.

It's the famous "puppy dog close" taken literally.
Take it home, spend the week-end with it, and if you don't like it,
bring it back on monday.
By monday, the kids have lost interest but mom loves the new puppy, so
the family keeps the dog for the next 15 years.
And when the dog finally dies, the family mourns it like it was a
member of their family.

They've done a good job with this one.
It can boot from a CD and use your computer's RAM and store files to a
USB drive.
They wisely made it possible to run "the works" in 60 meg memory  (Most
NT 4.0 machines had a minimum of 64 meg.  But it will function on 30
meg if you have a USB flash drive.
