Also kind of "[NEWS]":
------
Microsoft has 253 patent applications since 2001 that mention
?virtual?in the ABSTRACT field and Microsoft in the ASSIGNEE field.
Refined to ?virtual machine? in the ABSTRACT field there are 52.
International Business Machines has 59 applications for ?virtual
machine? in the ABSTRACT field.

With all the controversy about the Microsoft-Novell agreement and
?virtual servers?, it is becoming obvious that ?virtual machines?
is the targeted market Microsoft is after.
IBM excels in the manufacture of hardware for ?virtual machines?
(e.g. the zSeries servers).
Will IBM soon move away from Novell and into the Red Hat camp,
signing a similar patent deal to threaten Microsoft with respect
to virtual machines?
