three months ago Sandisk was /looking/ for an open source partner for
their new player. Which suggests that they don't have open source
now??
At a guess they have built their player(s) with a software decoder
using open source software and would .. probably.. be exempt from the
licence payments expected for hardware players.
But - as I understand it (i.e., only vaguely) only /free/ software
decoders are exempt; so unless Sandisk are going to give their players
away (or maybe sell them as .wma/.ogg players with a ability to play
mp3's) they are in tricky legal waters.
