Over at the #awkwardtv IRC channel, poster "Beyond" just announced that
he's gotten Gentoo installed and running on his Apple TV. He used the
mach_linux_kernel maker from mactel_linux (aka Gimli's loader). The OS
(2.6.20.6 with the AppleTV patch) seems to be up and working after a
few
initial problems (now solved) with repeating characters.

It's pretty pointless, apart from being a nice proof-of-concept showoff.
One
can get a fanless PC to do all the same things. It would cost under $200
and
require no tinkering.
sure, but it would be much bigger, no wireless, no remote, no hdmi, no
optical audio, etc.
Oh clueless one from Qwest, you can add $100 or less to the price and
you can have all that stuff you named. BTW, wireless is overrated. It should
only be used for things that require it and are moved frequently. The
802.11x range is getting crowded. Lots of people are getting interference
problems from others who use the same frequency spectrum. Wired connections
have greater speed and reliability then wireless. So anyone wanting a good
setup would have wired connections for things they want to work reliably.

There is also the security issue, although one hopes
WiFi is using encrypted packets by now (I don't have a
clue here since I'm not wireless except for an old beeper
:-) ). At least with wired one has to do a bit of work
to attempt to pick up the electromagnetic emanations from
one's wiring.
You're talking to wrong person about security. Slade boi believes that
windows doesn't get viruses.
