The record was pressed with the curve in place and the electronics in
the pre-amp compensated and put things back to flat again.
Mostly done for to allow really low and less so high frequencies
to be recorded on vinyl without the cartridge dancing out of the grooves.

Of course dynamic range on most recordings is compressed to give
that "in your face" sound when the songs are played on the radio.
The effect is that the song sounds very loud and punchy even
though the dynamic range is less than that on the source recording.
A classic example is the guitar on "Eric Carmen and the Rasberries"
"Go All The Way".
