As the two largest video card producers, the participation of AMD and
NVIDIA in that list is key. As I understand it, they continue to
support OpenGL as a way to keep a modicum of independence from
Microsoft. They can use the custom extensions capability of OpenGL
to showcase new cutting edge rendering technology without waiting on
MS to rev the DirectX API.
