2007: A good year for geeks

,----[ Quote ]
| 2.) Dirt-cheap computers that run open-source operating systems and software
| became an entire new product category.
|
| The Linux OS and open-source software in general -- software that was built
| on a volunteer basis and which can be distributed for free -- has been taking
| its own sweet time slouching toward Bethlehem. 2007 probably was the first
| year Linux was even safe for human consumption. And even there, I'd recommend
| installing it only if you have a geek in the family who can help you.
|
| But by and large, if you've got the stuff installed properly, it's smooth
| sailing.
|
| You can select among fantastically cheap computers that are perfectly
| adequate for the limited needs of most users. The $299 Eee PC subnotebook,
| Wal-Mart's $199 Everex Green PC, and even the $99 Zonbu desktop aren't ideal
| Volkscomputers, but they are precisely the kicks in the pants that the
| industry needed: a push to make machines that are universally affordable, and
| a Linux that can be operated and maintained by people other than smug bearded
| men.

PC Pro's biggest stories of 2007

,----[ Quote ]
| As 2007 draws to a close we cast an eye over the stories that attracted the
| most clicks on the PC Pro website this year.
|
| 1. Asus stuns Computex with £100 laptop
| Long before it was the reviewer's darling, the Asus Eee PC was already
| causing a stir on the PC Pro site. Our report from Computex of a £100 laptop,
| running Linux and weighing less than a hardback book, generated a lot of
| excitement among the tech community and swiftly made the story our biggest of
| the year.

The Year the GPL Went to War

,----[ Quote ]
| For developers, the open source world of 2007 was all about updates and
| interesting new projects. From a new version of Eclipse to a new scheduler in
| Linux, developers around the world contributed their free time to make their
| lives and the lives of others collectively easier. But in hindsight, the
| significance of 2007 may well be that the GPL finally grew some teeth.

2007 Roundup: Open source comes of age

,----[ Quote ]
| Two major open source projects finally came to fruition in 2007, bringing
| with them major headlines.
|
| The One Laptop Per Child project finally rolled its first machines off the
| production line, and the latest version of the GNU General Public Licence
| arrived after 18 months of hard draft.
|
| The OLPC had a rocky year, after orders placed with Nigeria in 2006 were
| cancelled at the last minute. The country ditched the OLPC XO laptops in
| favour of Intel's Classmate PCs.
|
| OLPC was started in 2005 to create a laptop that cost only $100 to
| manufacture, although the cost has almost doubled since then.
|
| The Linux-based machines started a trend among manufacturers and retailers.
| Asus created a competing notebook called the Eee PC, which sold for $350 in
| the US.
|
| Wal-Mart offered a similar idea to US consumers by selling $200 Ubuntu Linux
| PCs which sold out in less than two weeks.

Five desktop Linux highlights of 2007

,----[ Quote ]
| That's a lot of disgruntled users, and some of them are now looking to Linux
| and Mac OS X for a replacement. So, I'll end this year's survey of the best
| of the Linux desktop with a salute to the worst of Microsoft's desktop. If it
| weren't for Vista, far fewer people would be giving Linux a chance. Thanks,
| Bill and Steve, we couldn't have done it without you.

Prediction: Linux will Eat Microsoft on Most Desktops

,----[ Quote ]
| Now, compare that to a $500.00 desktop running Linux and OpenSource
| applicaitons. That would be about $50,000. The difference? Two or three
| employees, a huge bonus, a couple of vehicles, whatever. Not small.

Microsoft's Big Problem in a Small Box

,----[ Quote ]
| Vista is a big operating system that demands monster graphics and dual-core
| processors. But what if the market pines for a whole lot less?
|
| [...]
|
| The mass move to mobile computing is a destabilizing force and harbinger of
| change. Microsoft's position would be better if Vista didn't demand so much
| when the market wants so little.

Linux is about to take over the low end of PCs

,----[ Quote ]
| Opinion -- Sometimes, several unrelated changes come to a head at the same
| time, with a result no one could have predicted. The PC market is at such a
| tipping point right now and the result will be millions of Linux-powered PCs
| in users' hands.
|
| [...]
|
| Microsoft will fight this trend tooth and nail. It will cut prices to the
| point where it'll be bleeding ink on some of its product lines. And Windows
| XP is going to stick around much longer than Microsoft ever wanted it to.
| Still, it won't be enough. By attacking from the bottom, where Microsoft can
| no longer successfully compete, Linux will finally cut itself a large slice
| of the desktop market pie.

Windows Vista: Sold but not deployed

,----[ Quote ]
| Microsoft says it remains happy with enterprise sales of Vista -- however,
| the software behemoth acknowledges that many businesses which have bought
| Vista licences are yet to deploy the software.

Acer: PC industry 'disappointed' with Vista

,----[ Quote
| Acer president Gianfranco Lanci became the first major PC manufacturer to
| openly attack Microsoft over the Windows Vista operating system in the
| Financial Times Deutschland on Monday.
|
| Lanci said the operating system was riddled with problems and gave users and
| businesses no reason to buy a new PC, according to the report. Taiwan-based
| Acer is the world's fourth-largest PC manufacturer, after HP, Dell and
| Lenovo.
|
| "The whole industry is disappointed with Windows Vista," Lanci said.

Ugly view mars Windows Vista birthday

,----[ Quote ]
| According to latest data from NPD, Microsoft is shipping fewer boxed copies
| of Windows Vista than it did Windows XP at the same point in the operating
| systems' lifecycles.

The Vista Death Watch

,----[ Quote ]
| Microsoft has extended the life of Windows XP because Vista has simply not
| shown any life in the market. We have to begin to ask ourselves if we are
| really looking at Windows Me/2007, destined to be a disdained flop. By all
| estimates the number of Vista installations hovers around the number of Macs
| in use.
|
| How did this happen? And what’s going to happen next? Does Microsoft have a
| Plan B? A number of possibilities come to mind, and these things must be
| considered by the company itself.

Lenovo offers downgrade from Windows Vista to Windows XP

,----[ Quote ]
| My colleague Stian just sent me this interesting link regarding my
| experiences with Windows Vista. Since I assume the link will NOT have the
| visual appearence it has right now for very many more hours (days) I've
| created a screenshot of how it looked when I went into the site.

Windows Vista kicked out of Olympics PCs

| Microsoft's latest version of Windows is too risky to implement for the
| important computers managing the 2008 Olympic summer games in Beijing, said

DSG continues retailer woes

,----[ Quote ]
| DSG, the company formerly known as Dixons, became the latest British retailer
| to report a drop in profits for the summer months today. But it wasn’t all
| down to the rotten weather – this time it was also Microsoft’s fault.

Dell casts doubts on Vista

,----[ Quote ]
| Dell today revealed that it will restore the option to use Windows XP on
| some of its home systems, marking a potentially damaging blow to
| Microsoft's hopes for the newer Windows Vista.
|
| [...]
|
| While a popular request through the company's IdeaStorm website, the
| choice was substantially outnumbered by requests for pre-installed
| Linux, US-based technical support, and other features -- pointing to a
| larger general demand for the change. The turnaround may be a reflection of
| an overall backlash against Vista, observed IDC analyst Richard Shim.
