When you mentioned suspend2, then I just knew I came across many howto's. In
fact, a Web search brought up a lot of results, e.g.:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=75443

I'm not sure if there is some addon/glued-on solution that SuSE and Ubuntu
include, but suspension of a machine is said to be a solved problem,
according to something I must have read. Maybe it isn't consistent across
distribution. Maybe it hasn't just made it as a kernel patch, let alone a
patch for Morton's mm-tree.

I think they still concentrate on bugfixing, with the intent of perfecting
the kernel before moving on. Rushing things just leads to errors that are
harder to track later. It's tempting to just add features, bells and
whistles. But it has a cost and danger associated with it, so Linus decided
to stop several months. Think an operating system that is insecure at the
lower levels and thus requires building from scratch or bolting on
pseudo-security on top. Yes, I have a particular O/S in mind. *smile*
