Does it do it as well as Photoshop does?  I do not work in the pro printing
industry, but those who do have told me GIMP is a joke with regards to CMYK.
But let's even grant that GIMP does CMYK... how about all the other features
it is lacking:

* 16 and 32 bit support
* Adjustment layers
* Advanced black and white conversion tools
* High quality type features
* Image warp
* Integration with Illustrator
* Layer alignment and blending
* Layer sets
* Persistent history states
* Photoshop plugins
* Quick selection tool, refine edge, and other advanced selection tools
* Smart filters
* Smart objects
* Spot color
* Vanishing point
* Vector based layers with effects

 
I could be wrong on a couple of those, but last I checked it was lacking all
of those.
