It's hard to beat Free (as in freedom) and free (acquisition costs). And yet,
Microsoft spread myths like "you get what you paid for", as if software can
be equated to a pair of shoes. The piracy Microsoft encouraged (or turned a
blind eye to) -- in order to later capitalise on 'network effect' -- is
another way of exploiting this duplicability of software. They used it to
extract money, whereas free software encourages equality. No government
should put cost as a priority that's higher than equality, freedom, and
indpendence.
