True, there are many factors to consider here. Previously, Michael judged
distros performance using brute-force command line utilities, which is (again)
a poor benchmark. Because of the many free parameters, you can never have a
golden standard for the benchmark.

In the subject line, let's assume a single GPU which has just one driver (for
each platform, unless you count the fairly experimental open source
implementation). In that respect, given the circumstances -- however
inconvenient they may seem -- Linux performs better. It doesn't beat anything
if it's subjected to the limitation imposed by some /third/ party though.
Potential isn't considered here.
