I've been saying much the same here for months, possibly even years,
now.  The traditional desktop is very much the dinosaur of the modern
computing age, so seeking dominance of it is quite possibly a little
pointless.  Perhaps what is more important is to ensure that free and
open protocols work between all classes of devices, /including/ desktops
for those people who still will continue to use them (there will be a
very large number), as well as those who will use consoles, those who
will use mobiles, those who will use web tablets like the Nokia N800,
those who will use portables like the GP2X.  

The lower layers of packet networking are remarquably well defined and
documented; however, how well is syncML supported across different
packages and machines, say?
