is probably as good a ref as any; apparently "Happy Days"
started this expression because Henry Winkler ("Fonzie",
to series fans) -- or a stunt double thereof -- was on
waterskis jumping a shark tank. The Wiki refers to
http://www.wordorigins.org/index.php/site/2006/07/P5/
which gives a slightly more authoritative reference,
and an explicit date of the jump (or at least the date it
was aired): 1977-09-20.
However, the actual phrase apparently did not come into wide
use until almost a decade later, if not two. Of course
Hollyweird has its own take on phraseology anyway, and I'm not
up on the latest variants thereof. ;-)
