Ars at FOSSCamp: integrating Internet services into the GNOME desktop

,----[ Quote ]
| A FOSSCamp session led by Red Hat developers presented the GNOME Online
| Desktop project, the nexus of GNOME's efforts to integrate support for modern
| web services into the open source desktop environment. As social networking
| web sites and other Web 2.0 technologies become more pervasive, some believe
| that desktop computers will increasingly be seen primarily as vehicles for
| accessing content that resides in the cloud.

Choosing a Desktop for GNU/Linux

,----[ Quote ]
| "It's like starting another operating system," a colleague complained
| recently when he switched from the GNOME to the KDE desktop. He was
| exaggerating, but the impression is accurate. Unlike Windows or OS X, where
| the desktop and the window manager -- the program that controls how programs
| open -- are fixed, in GNU/Linux, you have dozens of choices for a graphical
| interface, each one with its own look, tradition, and utilities.

True. DEs matter much more than the distro (same underlying packages anyway,
with the exception of RPM/Deb/Slackware/other). All distros can adapt to all
DEs.

New Desktop Face-Off: Gnome 2.20 vs KDE 3.5

| You'll have to decide which tradeoffs between the KDE's functionality and
| Gnome's simplicity will make your work easier, in isolation or by
| collaborating with others.

A tale of two desktops

,----[ Quote ]
| Many smaller steps toward consistency have already been made by both
| GNOME and KDE. KDE 4 should also see the adoption of freedesktop.org
| projects like the GStreamer multimedia framework and D-Bus
| inter-process messaging framework. Developments like this should
| continue to improve the consistency of the Linux desktop in to the
| future.
