Which ultimately died down to a ripple, and, get this (I'm just guessing
here) drove more Linux users underground so that it helped make it
appear as if Linux "share" were falling.

Microsoft won't do that.  Even sticking to GPLv2 code, they won't be
able to Tivo-ise enough of it to make a real impact, except perhaps in
the same area that Tivo did its work.
