[News] Accusations Against IBM Seem Baseless; Is Microsoft Behind It Again?

IBM ban from federal contracts lifted

,----[ Quote ]
| It’s not entirely clear what the EPA ban was for in the first place, but IBM
| said in a statement that it would continuing to cooperate with the EPA and
| the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, which served
| grand jury subpoenas in search of documents and testimony relating to the
| contract. So apparently, they don’t know what’s going on either then.

It's beginning to seem likely that Microsoft was behind this. Notes and

IBM blackballed in US federal ambush

,----[ Quote ]
| IBM learned of its temporary banishment through a third-party source last
| Friday. Upon looking at the US General Services Administration website, the
| company found it was on the excluded parties list, along with minimal
| information.
|
| "Prior to learning of the temporary suspension on March 28, 2008, IBM was not
| aware that the EPA or US Attorney’s office were considering any action
| against IBM," the company said today.

Microsoft to IBM: Tolerate PSI Mainframes or Quit Europe

,----[ Quote ]
| If you think Microsoft has an aversion to Article 82 of the European Treaty,
| the anti-monopoly law that forced it to open some Windows server APIs and
| also to live with others' media players on desktops, think again. Microsoft
| is backing Platform Solutions (PSI) in an Article 82 action that could loosen
| IBM's grip on the mainframe. If PSI is given the keys to every glass house in
| Europe, Microsoft will be one of its principal guests. In fact, PSI could get
| more from IBM than it wanted when it first announced mainframe-compatible
| systems.Last November 27, PSI announced that it had raised more than $37
| million in additional capital, and that one of the companies in the deal was
| Microsoft. Other investors in PSI include Intel, Blueprint Ventures, Goldman
| Sachs, InterWest Partners, and InvestCorp.
