[News] Sharp Rise for GNU/Linux on the Desktop, Vendor Support Follows

Linux desktop market share is up as much as 61 percent, study finds

| It's not a perfect way to measure adoption. It's highly fallible. But one
| thing does seem clear to me from the data: Linux on the desktop is growing.
| It may only be growing within a small class of users, but it is growing. But
| if my grandma can use it, perhaps that "small class" will grow, too.

As he says, it cannot ever be measured reliably, but it's the *trend* one
should be paying attention to (and adoption curves are never linear). Usage of
Linux doubled on the desktop in one year, according to the studies in the
links below (participation). And:

Why I Ubuntu

| As the user base grows, the Linux experience itself will improve. OEMS and
| hardware manufacturers starting to provide drivers and application support.
| The initiatives are modest, but they are a start. There is a shift that is
| happening. It is subtle, but it is real. That should encourage us all that
| Linux is on the verge of something big.

Feeling the heat at Microsoft

| A couple of years ago you reiterated that IBM was Microsoft's biggest
| competitor and you said not just on the business side, but overall. If I ask
| you who is Microsoft's biggest competitor now, who would it be?
|
| Ballmer: Open...Linux. I don't want to say open source. Linux, certainly have
| to go with that.

Microsoft's SEC:

| A prominent example of open source software is the Linux operating system...
| To the extent open source software gains increasing market acceptance, sales
| of our products may decline, we may have to reduce the prices we charge for
| our products, and revenue and operating margins may consequently decline.

Survey Says … Linux Desktop Is Ever More Popular

,----[ Quote ]
| The first thing we can say about the Linux desktop in 2007 is that there are
| more users than ever. The Linux Foundation 2006 survey had fewer than 10,000
| people signing in. This year more than 20,000 Linux desktop users reported
| in.

| Okay, now lets tie this all back in together. Novell claimed several months
| back in a video ad that Desktop Linux users accounted for upwards of
| 30,000,000 different people. That's 30 million. Recent statements made by
| some Novell representatives indicate that they expect there are upwards of
| 50,000,000 Desktop Linux users. Microsoft has never contested the number of
| Desktop Linux users, and if anything the deal Microsoft signed with Novell
| was tacit agreement that Microsoft believed those numbers to be accurate.
