This helps in improving Wine.

Last week:

The making of Wine (how to make Windows apps merrier with Linux)

,----[ Quote ]
| Flash forward to today. It's been the better part of a decade and Microsoft
| has not been toppled by anyone's reckoning. However it did release Vista -
| perhaps the most hated Windows operating system of all time (though it's hard
| to beat Windows ME on that count). Enterprises badly want alternatives to
| Windows. Desktop Linux has come a long way since 1999, too. and (who knew?)
| the Mac has become the ultra chic, must-have PC. The enterprise has its
| alternatives - if it can only get those mission critical Windows apps to work
| flawlessly. Wine, in its commercial form, has been doing so for years.
|
| So, in 2008, the 1.0 version will hit the streets and the timing could not be
| more perfect. White admits that not every Windows application will work
| flawlessly on Wine, but many a critical one for the enterprise has been
| specifically optimized.

Does WINE + Linux support more Windows apps than Vista?

| WINE supports most of the applications which are made for Windows
| 2.0 up to Windows XP. WINE has the ability to run different versions
| of IE, run most of Adobe's products, run World of Warcraft, Half Life
| 2, Microsoft Office 2003, XP, 2000 and 97, Visio, Quicken,
|
|     * Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars
|     * Need for Speed Carbon

|
| What about drivers, hardware support, and upgrades?
|
| Want to upgrade you XP to Vista? no chance. might as well do a fresh
| install and shell out $300.

Wine 1.0 On The Menu For Desktop Linux Users

,----[ Quote ]
| It looks like Wine's time has finally come: Version 1.0 of the Windows
| emulation software is now slated for a June release. And Linux users almost
| certainly have Google -- or, at least, Google's money -- to thank for moving
| things along.
|
| At this point, Wine has been in development nearly 15 years. No, that's not a
| typo, and there shouldn't be a decimal between the 1 and 5. Of course, for
| most of that time, Wine was an all-volunteer effort; even at the best of
| times, the project was often sorely lacking in QA resources.
|
| Codeweavers, which now sponsors Wine development and uses the software as the
| basis for its own Crossover Linux product, certainly helped to pick up the
| development pace: Today, Wine supports nearly 1,300 Windows apps to one
| degree or another, including outstanding support for Adobe Photoshop CS2.

Wine 1.0 Release Criteria updated

,----[ Quote ]
| Dan in return modified the release criteria and Alexandre thought the new
| changes looked good. Later in the thread a couple people asked about small
| janitorial patches, and it was agreed if the changes were low risk they
| should be applied and go into Wine 1.0 with larger patches being deferred to
| Wine 1.1.0
