[News] Importance of an 'Open Source' Lifestyle for Entertainment, Privacy

Open source entertainment

,----[ Quote ]
| I was reading the wikipedia article on the Sony rootkit scandal from a couple
| of years ago, and it got me to thinking about the war that the entertainment
| media industry has declared on its customers. And it occurred to me that some
| parallels exist between that and the open source movement.
|
| First off, I don't feel any particular sympathy for the entertainment
| industry. They go whining and crying to the news media and to Congress
| whenever they feel their rights are being violated, but as the Sony rootkit
| business shows, they don't give a fart about the rights of their customers
| (or their artists, for that matter) when it comes to protecting their revenue
| stream.

The Open Source Lifestyle -- Privacy versus Respect

| And the flip side is that as people, as parents, as mentors, and as leaders,
| we need to teach about respect on the Internet. Privacy based on respect is
| much more likely to be truly private.

Microsoft patents the mother of all adware systems

| The adware framework would leave almost no data untouched in its quest to

| user music files, downloaded podcasts, computer settings, computer status
| messages (e.g., a low memory status or low printer ink)," and more. How could
| we have been so blind as to not see the marketing value in computer status
| messages?

New software can identify you from your online habits

| That is the spectre raised by new research conducted by Microsoft.
| The computing giant is developing software that could accurately

| experts say the idea is a clear threat to privacy - and may be
