Best of Open Source Software Awards 2008

,----[ Quote ]
| If the phrase "open source software" continues to conjure images of
| impassioned programmers selflessly collaborating for the common good, it may
| be because, even as commercial interests are behind many of the most
| prominent projects, the results are no less inspired -- and typically no less
| free. Yes, advanced functionality or maintenance and support may require
| writing a check, but freeloaders looking for high-quality software -- of
| almost any kind -- have never had it so good.
|
| Chosen by InfoWorld Test Center editors, analysts, and reviewers, InfoWorld's
| annual Best of Open Source Software awards (or Bossies, for short) celebrate
| the best products that open source has to offer: the best free software on
| the planet for businesses, their IT staffs, and their employees'
| workstations.

InfoWorld deserves some credit for the fight against Vista forcefeeding.

Recent:

‘Save XP’ videos sought

,----[ Quote ]
| As part of InfoWorld's effort to save Windows XP from being discontinued on
| June 30, we're encouraging IT staffers as well as individual users to
| contribute their own videos on why XP should be saved. (Our plea is serious,
| but why not have some fun at the same time, right?) To help meet the goal of
| spreading the word about the "Save XP" petition effort, we do ask that each
| video show the www.SaveXP.com URL.

Was Vista DOA?

,----[ Quote ]
| A recent survey of IT shops shows that over 70 percent of respondents will
| still be using their 'current OS' in 2009, Kennedy explains.
|
| "Since the overwhelming majority (92 percent) of these sites are still
| running Windows XP, that means that Vista will likely never achieve critical
| mass in the enterprise."

Feeling the heat at Microsoft

,----[ Quote ]
| A couple of years ago you reiterated that IBM was Microsoft's biggest
| competitor and you said not just on the business side, but overall. If I ask
| you who is Microsoft's biggest competitor now, who would it be?
|
| Ballmer: Open...Linux. I don't want to say open source. Linux, certainly have
| to go with that.

Linux a greener alternative to a forced Vista move?

,----[ Quote ]
| Lo, there's another alternative, one that has been pointed out by a some
| respondents to my previous post: Move to Linux.
|
| For example, this comes from Gostak:
|
|     "I am suggesting VMware on Linux with your current crop of XP licenses.
|     Mission-critical stuff that must run on XP is available, meanwhile you
|     can be working on migrating everything to a native Linux environment that
|     will not toss you on your keister in a few years. Further, the one big
|     thing coming down the pike, 64-bit computing, is fully supported with
|     Linux, so you don't have to worry about being able to fully utilize the
|     next generation."
|
| It's an excellent point. Companies concerned both with sustainability and
| Microsoft's current ploy may indeed find Linux an appealing alternative. Some
| IT leaders out there have already observed that, among other things, Linux
| seems to have a "green" advantage over Windows in terms of energy efficiency.
