"Linux [...] gained some acceptance as competitive pressures
lead PC OEMs to reduce costs and new, lower price PC form
factors gain adoption. [...]

The assorted dufii have informed us, repeatedly, that linux is
not a threat to MS. They've gone to great lengths to let us
know how MS is doing on the embedded front, how wonderfully
well the Xbox is doing, informing us about advances on cell
phones, let us know that Windows Mobile is growing by leaps
and bounds, told us until they're blue in their dufii faces
that OEMs can't and won't do more than token work with linux
because it's a niche that nobody wants.

Therefore, the above is MS lying to shareholders, plain and
simple.

If Linux is not a threat, then why all the astroturfing in this newsgroup and other Linux newsgroups?

It is done to wipe the Linux and other competitor's names off the face of the globe:

'Use [...] the Internet, etc. to heighten the impression that the enemy is desperate, demoralized, defeated, [...] associated with mental deficiency, as in, "he believes in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny". Just keep rubbing it in, via the [...] newsgroups, [...] make the complete failure of the competition's technology part of the mythology of the computer industry.'
