compiz-fusion: Cylinder anyone?

,----[ Quote ]
| If you enable 3D desktop effects in your desktop, we can change the shape of
| the desktop when we 'spin' it to cylinder.

It's not possible with Free drivers too.

ATI R500: Mesa vs. Catalyst Benchmarking

,----[ Quote ]
| While the R500 Mesa stack is fast enough for a desktop user just interested
| in Compiz and basic OpenGL acceleration, it isn't fast enough for performance
| enthusiasts or die-hard gamers. In some tests such as Warsow, Tremulous,
| Urban Terror, and Enemy Territory both the X1300PRO and X1800XL had playable
| frame-rates, the Mesa benchmarks fell significantly behind the Catalyst 8.8
| driver. Well, there is an exception. The Radeon X1800XL with the Mesa git
| code had performed surprisingly well with the Unreal Tournament 2004 Demo and
| so much so that it had outperformed Catalyst 8.8 in three of the tests. It
| was only by a few frames, but we were certainly surprised and lead us to
| believe there is a regression with Unreal Tournament 2004 and the Linux
| Catalyst software.

,----[ Quote ]
| We have just found out from AMD's John Bridgman that Alex Deucher, one of
| their open-source engineers, has today successfully rendered its first
| hardware-accelerated triangle on the Radeon HD 4800 series (RV770). In other
| words, the first open-source 3D milestone for this latest graphics card
| family from ATI!

Compiz is the Most Important Thing to Ever Happen to Linux.

,----[ Quote ]
| If the Linux community wants to wipe Windows and Mac out of the OS business
| all they need to do in focus all of their collective efforts on developing
| Compiz. With the combine intelligence of hundreds of thousands of nerds we
| could develop the most pimped out windows management system known to mankind.
| The kids don’t want stability, they want an OS w/ rims that spin.

Compiz is Cool – and Why That Matters

,----[ Quote ]
| One of the most vexed questions within the open source world is when, if
| ever, GNU/Linux will take off on the desktop. Strangely, this isn't really
| about capabilities: as someone who has Ubuntu running on both of his main
| systems, I can attest to the fact that GNU/Linux is not just usable, it's a
| downright pleasure to use. In fact, I constantly marvel at how transparent
| open source has become: most of the time I'm simply not aware that I'm using
| it – it just works.
|
| This raises the interesting question: so what's missing? What more does open
| source need to do in order to capture the attention of the general user? I
| think the answer can be found on this YouTube video.
