First Look at Mandriva Flash 2008

,----[ Quote
| After spending a few days running Mandriva Flash 2008, I was pleased with the
| system. It's hard not to appreciate its versatility - you can easily move any
| data between the device and another computer without having to boot it first
| and the operating system itself seemed to be very stable (once you overcome
| the temptation to turn on CompizFusion) and bug-free. Its hardware detection
| was excellent and performance rather better than I expected. This should be a
| perfect companion for the road - provided that you have a remote server to
| back-up your work; after all, the USB key is so small that there is a real
| danger that it could get misplaced or lost. The only other negative: Mandriva
| Flash isn't particularly cheap, but as always with these products, you get
| what you pay for.

Techfest 2008: Bombay, India

,----[ Quote
| Bombay, India. While the official name of the city is now "Mumbai", the
| name "Bombay" is still used by a lot of the inhabitants, and its use draws
| images of one of the world's largest cities, a gateway to the sub-continent.
| Therefore an invitation to speak at Techfest 2008 (http://www.techfest.org/),
| a large student-organized technical showcase, was impossible to turn down.

Mandriva Flash 2008 First Look

| Both the Metisse and Compiz Fusion 3D desktops worked well on the laptop, but
| were disabled on the old desktop. I'm not sure why people really want 3D
| desktops, however: it's just eye-candy.

[Mandriva CEO:] An open letter to Steve Ballmer

,----[ Quote ]
| Wow! I’m impressed, Steve! What have you done for these guys to change their
| mind like this? It’s pretty clear to me, and it will be clear to everyone.
| How do you call what you just did Steve, in the place where you live? In my
| place, they give it various names, I’m sure you know them.
|
| Hey Steve, how do you feel looking at yourself in the mirror in the morning?
|
| Of course, I will keep fighting this one and the next one, and the next one.
| You have the money, the power, and maybe we have a different sense of ethics
| you and I, but I believe that hard work, good technology and ethics can win
| too.

Lessons from Africa: How to Kill Your Own FUD

| So, even as Microsoft claims superior quality over Linux, they act as if they
| don't even buy their own FUD. If they really believed that Windows was
| superior to Linux, they wouldn't have to bribe people with “marketing help”
| to get them to choose Windows.
