A Bashful Glimpse at Solaris Indiana Developer Preview Edition

,----[ Quote ]
| I've explored OpenSolaris systems before and had similar issues. I stamp my
| foot and whine. I wait a while and try one again. And it looks like I should
| just get to be comfortable with the idea that I'm not going to get my pony,
| not for a while. The thing I can't seem to remember is that Linux took 15
| years to get where it is now, BSD took 30 years, and with Open Solaris being
| just over 2 years old, it is not going to just catch right up with the other
| Unix family members.

FreeBSD 7 will be revolutionary.

,----[ Quote ]
| A few weeks back, at the end of December, FreeBSD 7.0-RC1 was released.
| FreeBSD 7 will no doubt prove to be quite revolutionary. For one thing, this
| will be the first major FreeBSD release in a number of years. FreeBSD 6.0 was
| released in November of 2005, so there has been quite some time for the
| development of FreeBSD 7 to take place.

I tried to dirty my hands on OpenSolaris Belenix 0.6

,----[ Quote ]
| This reminds me of my initial days with Linux - about 8-10 years ago -
| when we were forced to configure each and every aspect of Linux
| configuration to simply work out things. Today, most Linux distribution
| do not require any advanced tweaking during their initial installation
| - most things work out-of-the-box and distributions like Xandros have
| simple, 4 click install options.
|
| It looks like OpenSolaris needs to travel a real long way, and journey
| has just begun.

Checking out Nexenta GNU/OpenSolaris

,----[ Quote ]
| I guess the appeal of Nexenta is... hmmm... I'm not really sure. It's
| running GNOME. It's brown. Looks an awful lot like Ubuntu. It's not
| using all GNU tools. Heck, it's not even using BSD tools. I mean,
| really, "ps ax" works on my mac and on my linux boxen. Does it work
| here? Nope. Gives me usage. The man page lies too.
