Ubuntu, everything I hoped for…so far…

,----[ Quote ]
| From the moment I bought my new laptop I’ve been struggling with Vista. Not
| because it’s not intuitive, or I hate the way it looks, or because it is so
| different from previous versions, or it’s more expensive than other OS’s.
| I’ve been struggling because I bought a brand spankin’ new laptop and it’s
| sluggish.
|
| [...]
|
| I visited the site: Ubuntu.com and downloaded the 7.10 Desktop .ISO version.
| I slapped in a blank CD and in a couple of minutes had an install CD. less
| than 20 minutes later I was up and running with a brand new OS.

Linux a greener alternative to a forced Vista move?

,----[ Quote ]
| Lo, there's another alternative, one that has been pointed out by a some
| respondents to my previous post: Move to Linux.
|
| For example, this comes from Gostak:
|
|     "I am suggesting VMware on Linux with your current crop of XP licenses.
|     Mission-critical stuff that must run on XP is available, meanwhile you
|     can be working on migrating everything to a native Linux environment that
|     will not toss you on your keister in a few years. Further, the one big
|     thing coming down the pike, 64-bit computing, is fully supported with
|     Linux, so you don't have to worry about being able to fully utilize the
|     next generation."
|
| It's an excellent point. Companies concerned both with sustainability and
| Microsoft's current ploy may indeed find Linux an appealing alternative. Some
| IT leaders out there have already observed that, among other things, Linux
| seems to have a "green" advantage over Windows in terms of energy efficiency.

Vista vs Linux : How far; how good ?

,----[ Quote ]
| The high tech professionals are getting more diverted to the Open Source
| technologies like Linux. Linux is giving a good competition to Windows. The
| increasing market share for Linux is an alarming call for Microsoft.

Vista – a/k/a MOPH (My Own Personal Hell)

,----[ Quote ]
| “…My conclusion is now that NO ONE who values their sanity, their time, their
| psyche and general sense of well-being should use Vista. At all. Under any
| circumstances. In fact, after giving it more than a fair shake over 11 months
| of daily use, I know think it deserves to be classified internationally as a
| Weapon of Mass Data Destruction. In fact, perhaps the best way to defeat Al
| Quaida or any other terrorist group would be to send them free copies of a
| particularly brain-dead version of Vista like “Home Basic” - it would stop
| them in their tracks, as it has done with me and so many others.”

Holy Crap: Did Bill Gates Just Say Windows Sucks?

,----[ Quote ]
| We asked a simple question: what Microsoft product could have used a little
| more polish before release? The answer astounded us. We would just like to
| thank Bill Gates for his honesty and his openness.

Linux PC models multiply as Vista struggles

,----[ Quote ]
| Until recently, Linux PCs were about as easy to find in stores as a vinyl
| record. Now, personal computers with the Linux operating system pre-installed
| are becoming more readily available, thanks to new models from upstarts and
| established PC makers -- and disappointment with Microsoft's new Windows
| Vista OS.

Windows Vista: Sold but not deployed

,----[ Quote ]
| Microsoft says it remains happy with enterprise sales of Vista -- however,
| the software behemoth acknowledges that many businesses which have bought
| Vista licences are yet to deploy the software.

Acer: PC industry 'disappointed' with Vista

,----[ Quote
| Acer president Gianfranco Lanci became the first major PC manufacturer to
| openly attack Microsoft over the Windows Vista operating system in the
| Financial Times Deutschland on Monday.
|
| Lanci said the operating system was riddled with problems and gave users and
| businesses no reason to buy a new PC, according to the report. Taiwan-based
| Acer is the world's fourth-largest PC manufacturer, after HP, Dell and
| Lenovo.
|
| "The whole industry is disappointed with Windows Vista," Lanci said.

Ugly view mars Windows Vista birthday

,----[ Quote ]
| According to latest data from NPD, Microsoft is shipping fewer boxed copies
| of Windows Vista than it did Windows XP at the same point in the operating
| systems' lifecycles.

The Vista Death Watch

,----[ Quote ]
| Microsoft has extended the life of Windows XP because Vista has simply not
| shown any life in the market. We have to begin to ask ourselves if we are
| really looking at Windows Me/2007, destined to be a disdained flop. By all
| estimates the number of Vista installations hovers around the number of Macs
| in use.
|
| How did this happen? And what’s going to happen next? Does Microsoft have a
| Plan B? A number of possibilities come to mind, and these things must be
| considered by the company itself.

Lenovo offers downgrade from Windows Vista to Windows XP

,----[ Quote ]
| My colleague Stian just sent me this interesting link regarding my
| experiences with Windows Vista. Since I assume the link will NOT have the
| visual appearence it has right now for very many more hours (days) I've
| created a screenshot of how it looked when I went into the site.

Windows Vista kicked out of Olympics PCs

,----[ Quote ]
| Microsoft's latest version of Windows is too risky to implement for the
| important computers managing the 2008 Olympic summer games in Beijing, said
| the event's computer supplier and sponsor Lenovo.

DSG continues retailer woes

,----[ Quote ]
| DSG, the company formerly known as Dixons, became the latest British retailer
| to report a drop in profits for the summer months today. But it wasn’t all
| down to the rotten weather – this time it was also Microsoft’s fault.

Dell casts doubts on Vista

,----[ Quote ]
| Dell today revealed that it will restore the option to use Windows XP on
| some of its home systems, marking a potentially damaging blow to
| Microsoft's hopes for the newer Windows Vista.
|
| [...]
|
| While a popular request through the company's IdeaStorm website, the
| choice was substantially outnumbered by requests for pre-installed
| Linux, US-based technical support, and other features -- pointing to a
| larger general demand for the change. The turnaround may be a reflection of
| an overall backlash against Vista, observed IDC analyst Richard Shim.

Prediction: Linux will Eat Microsoft on Most Desktops

,----[ Quote ]
| Now, compare that to a $500.00 desktop running Linux and OpenSource
| applicaitons. That would be about $50,000. The difference? Two or three
| employees, a huge bonus, a couple of vehicles, whatever. Not small.
