Software houses must declare patents in standard-setting process: Commission

,----[ Quote ]
| Software companies involved in setting technical standards should be forced
| to declare their intellectual property in the area and fix maximum fees for
| the standard's use of it before the standard is set, according to the
| European Commission.
|
| Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes told a Brussels forum that companies
| involved in negotiations to set standards should declare their interests and
| set maximum royalty rates so that others involved in the process can make
| informed decisions about which technologies to use.

| In the open source world, many grandiloquent declarations of free and open
| source commitment have been legitimately questioned by apparently minor
| details: Microsoft refusing the GNU GPLv3 on their open source repository
| CodePlex or Google refusing the GNU AGPLv3 (Affero) on open source repository
| Google Code are good examples of such troubling discrepancies.
|
| Short of a slow start and a few hiccups, SUN has done pretty well so far. The
| company seems genuinely committed to open source and free software. Here is a
| story that shows that SUN commitment runs even deeper.

There's also this new SSD technology from Sun now. ZFS+open source on top.

The ODF Alliance Backs the EU's Call for Open Source

,----[ Quote ]
| "The end is near for the era of public information being locked-in a closed
| format," said Marino Marcich, Managing Director of the ODF Alliance, in
| response to Kroes' comments made June 10th in a speech before OpenForum
| Europe. "The OpenDocument Format, with its status as the only internationally
| recognized open standard document format with a wide range of supporting
| applications, is a critical tool for governments to help end the era of
| lock-in."
