Mainstream U.S. Media Discovers Ubuntu Linux

,----[ Quote ]
| The VAR Guy was flipping though his Sunday morning paper when he spotted an
| article about Ubuntu Linux. He took a few more sips of coffee to perk up and
| make sure his eyes weren’t deceiving him. Sure enough, Ubuntu had made the
| leap into the mainstream media — earning coverage in Newsday, the eight
| largest newspaper in the nation. Has Ubuntu reached its tipping point with
| consumers?

The tipping point is already well behind. From here onwards, Linux grows very
fast (not just on desktops).

Open source business model reaching tipping point

,----[ Quote ]
| Over the last several years open source has grown in stature and maturity,
| becoming more worthy in the eyes of corporate buyers and investors. Everyone
| could point to Red Hat, which dominates the Linux operating system space, as
| the poster child for open source but few other “pure” open source companies
| rose up to that level. Sun has gradually been making its vast portfolio of
| software open source under various licenses, embracing the notion of FOSS
| (Free and Open Source Software). “Volume drives everything, and developers
| are picking free and open source software,” Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz has
| said.

IBM's 'Blue Cloud': The Tipping Point for Enterprise IT

,----[ Quote ]
| The future of IT is clearly about the efficiencies and agility of the
| grid/utility/Live/fabric/cloud/SOA/WOA thing. There can be no turning back. I
| believe Nick Carr is coming out with a book on this soon, The Big Switch:
| Rewiring the World, from Edison to Google and IT, and IT is by no means
| irrelevant this time.
|
| IBM's Blue Cloud, arriving in the first half of 2008, will use IBM
| BladeCenter servers, a Linux operating system, Xen-based virtualization and
| the company's own Tivoli management software. Nothing about this is terribly
| new.

Amsterdam mulls the Linux desktop

| This shift in Dutch city government toward Linux and open source
| lends credibility to graduate student David B. Rankin recent
| hypothesis that desktop Linux may be nearing a tipping point
| within government settings, after which adoption can be expected
| to accelerate.

Linux and automotive: reaching a tipping point

| This insightful guest column anticipates the emergence
| of embedded Linux as a key margins driver for the
| automotive industry, due to its ability to run
| "driver-assist" applications perceived as
