Open Source and Movie Magic

,----[ Quote ]
| Last week at FOSDEM, I attended Tux With Shades, Linux In Hollywood, a
| keynote by Robin Rowe and Gabrielle Pantera. Robin is the admin of the
| CinePaint project, which is used for frame-by-frame retouching of film - part
| of a long chain of technology needed for making movie magic, all of which
| typically runs on Linux.

The platform becoming a commodity and it's too late for Microsoft to fight it.
Even Silverlight already has antitrust regulators responding. They try to stop
the Web from being a commodity.

If Ever Linux Rules....

| # Intel Pentium will rise again - most Linux distributions run super fast on
| Pentium IV and 512 MB RAM without ever slowing down!
| # Steve Ballmer will be caught using Linux on his PC. Reason - Windows Vista
| too heavy on the poor guy's pocket!

Feeling the heat at Microsoft

,----[ Quote ]
| A couple of years ago you reiterated that IBM was Microsoft's biggest
| competitor and you said not just on the business side, but overall. If I ask
| you who is Microsoft's biggest competitor now, who would it be?
|
| Ballmer: Open...Linux. I don't want to say open source. Linux, certainly have
| to go with that.

Hollywood, Linux, and CinePaint at FOSDEM 2008

,----[ Quote ]
| At first, studios had no choice but to develop Linux applications in house.
| The film industry has millions of lines of Linux code, both desktop
| applications and server pipelines. Studio Linux programmers write code in
| C++, Python, Perl, and Java. What does all this secret proprietary Linux code
| do? And, why do they do parallel programming with grid computing? How does
| the film industry use renderfarms with thousands of CPUs?
