[News] GNU/Linux Makes Extremely Old Servers Functional

Good News: Linux gives life to old hardware. Bad News: Maybe in some cases it
shouldn't.

,----[ Quote ]
| I was in one of my customer's datacenters the other day, and while I do most
| work remotely, I had to take this opportunity to take some snapshots of their
| proxy server.
|
| This post is just a bit of fun. This is not supposed to be their server, it
| was just a stopgap measure because of multiple hardware failures. This is a
| large, well managed company, and this irregular situation will be fixed soon.
| And anyway, it is working just fine.
|
| As you know, Linux can do that kind of job easy without much hardware
| requirements. After all, it has to handle at most about 3Mbps of data, and
| this box has 2GB of ram, so there's plenty of room for a speedy cache.
|
| So, let's go for some good news/bad news.
|
| Good news: It's a true-blue IBM Server! Bad news: It's a IBM Netfinity 5000
| (model 3Ry)!

Router Firmware Recommendations: DD-WRT, Tomato, Other?

,----[ Quote ]
| The idea of exploring open source intrigues me, however, specifically in
| conjunction with Linksys' Linux-based WRT54GL. Therein my question to you;
| the most commonly mentioned open-source firmware images for this router that
| I hear of are DD-WRT and Tomato. I'm not sure which path I should choose, or
| if in fact there's another distro that I should instead pursue. I welcome
| firmware feedback and suggestions, both absolute and relative if you've
| tested multiple open-source candidates. Thanks in advance!

Stop! Don't trash those old PCs

| Interestingly enough, there is another operating system that most people are
| not familiar with called Linux. Linux (and its earlier version UNIX) have
| been around for a long time helping us place phones calls and providing
| access to the Internet. Linux, up until this point, has been mostly behind
| the scenes just doing its job and doing it well. You can get started with

Put your old machine to good use

| PCLinuxOS, which, along with Kubuntu and Ubuntu is one of the best
| Linux distributions around, only requires an old Pentium II (!) to

| you'll need to burn yourself a copy, so it's worth it to play around.
| There's a good chance you'll like what you see.

| Sure, it could go to the landfill, or you might be able to get a

| For better performance, most LiveCD distros can be installed onto a hard

| There's still some hope, though. Currently the Ubuntu Lite project is working

| Hat's Fedora on low-end machines.

Column: Linux lets you avoid upgrading computer

,----[ Quote ]
| Combine the alternative of using a Linux desktop with being able
| to use older computers often donated by Fortune 500 companies when
| they cycle to new systems every three to four years and you start
| to have a financially compelling argument for not having the same
| technology as everyone else.
|
| If you have a very large network, the finance picture needs to take
| into account the fact that your technicians would need to be familiar
| with another technology, but for smaller nonprofits and schools
| systems, I would seriously consider this desktop platform.
