Windows XP: Going, going ... gone?

,----[ Quote ]
| The approaching death of Windows XP may upset you, but it shouldn't come as a
| surprise. Microsoft Corp.'s product life-cycle guidelines have foretold the
| fate of XP since 2001. In fact, Microsoft has been killing off one version of
| a product as it is replaced with another for years now. But this time around,
| the approaching demise of XP is getting more attention than, say, the final
| passing of Windows 2000.

Mentions Linux also.

They still try to lure people in to Vista, or at least prevent them from

Microsoft: Chinese Remain Sanguine About XP Expiration

,----[ Quote ]
| People are somewhat less worried about the availability of Windows XP in
| China because they know that XP will be available here for as long as anyone
| wants, and for a very small price. (Without Microsoft support, certainly, but
| available.)
|
| Microsoft has made tremendous progress against piracy in China over the past
| several years. The problem is far from beaten, but the company has more than
| doubled the percentage of people paying for their Microsoft software.
|
| But by taking Windows off the shelves, Microsoft appears to be creating a
| perverse incentive for people who might otherwise buy legitimate software to
| resort to piracy. Indeed, Microsoft appears to be creating the ideal
| conditions for a thriving market in illicit copies of Windows XP after June
| 30, and not just in China.

| Dell today revealed that it will restore the option to use Windows XP on
| some of its home systems, marking a potentially damaging blow to
| Microsoft's hopes for the newer Windows Vista.

|
| While a popular request through the company's IdeaStorm website, the
| choice was substantially outnumbered by requests for pre-installed
| Linux, US-based technical support, and other features -- pointing to a
| larger general demand for the change. The turnaround may be a reflection of
| an overall backlash against Vista, observed IDC analyst Richard Shim.

Acer: PC industry 'disappointed' with Vista

,----[ Quote
| Acer president Gianfranco Lanci became the first major PC manufacturer to
| openly attack Microsoft over the Windows Vista operating system in the
| Financial Times Deutschland on Monday.
|
| Lanci said the operating system was riddled with problems and gave users and
| businesses no reason to buy a new PC, according to the report. Taiwan-based
| Acer is the world's fourth-largest PC manufacturer, after HP, Dell and
| Lenovo.
|
| "The whole industry is disappointed with Windows Vista," Lanci said.
