IBM smells Sun red ink

,----[ Quote ]
| Based on the methodologies developed at Sector7, IBM launched the Migration
| Factory service back in mid-2005, which aimed primarily at getting Solaris
| shops to move to IBM servers running Linux, but which has subsequently been
| expanded to cover migrations to AIX. To date, Migration Factory has done
| 1,200 customer migrations.

Linux: The Joe Sixpack Strategy

,----[ Quote ]
| Right now, your average end-user who doesn’t frequent technology sites like
| ZDNet probably have very little idea of what Linux is. The fact of the matter
| is, Linux has had little public exposure in the popular media in the last
| several years, this despite the rapid growth of the OS in the enterprise as
| an application server and in embedded systems. IBM ran Linux commercials from
| 2004 to 2006, but they were targeted towards the enterprise, not the
| consumer. To gain significant mind share, particularly of the American
| public, Linux is going to need lots of TV commercials and product placement.
| To do this, somebody is going to have to spend money - but the question
| remains, who? If we’re talking desktop Linux, it’s going to have to be
| entities that have distributions that could be promoted as real Windows
| alternatives. Fedora is out of the running because it gets outdated every
| year, and despite Redhat’s solid enterprise growth and business model, they
| have little interest in promoting Linux on the desktop.

Sabre Holdings: Red Hat Thrives in Place of Unix

,----[ Quote ]
| When Sabre actually benchmarked Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) running on
| Intel against Solaris on SPARC, it found quite a difference — to say the
| least. The Linux/Intel combination was three times faster than the Sun Unix
| solution, and when both licensing and hardware costs were taken into account
| it worked out about 90 percent cheaper, according to Wiseman.
