Linux Creator Linus Torvalds, Others Honored In Silicon Valley

,----[ Quote ]
| The Computer History Museum on Tuesday night honored three legends in the
| industry, including Linux creator Linus Torvalds, whose operating system
| became the catalyst for the open source software movement that challenged
| traditional concepts of intellectual property.

Linux's Next Victim

,----[ Quote ]
| UNIX is a ship very slowly letting in water. The rats aren't about to abandon
| it quite yet, but they are certainly checking where the life vests are
| stored.
|
| The cause of the leak is Linux. UNIX may account for about a third of the
| server market, but its upstart cousin is slowly but surely eating in to that
| share. It's not that there's anything wrong with UNIX — far from it. It's
| just that Linux is becoming increasingly capable of doing the less-demanding
| tasks that UNIX has historically been asked to do.

Ballmer Still Searching for an Answer to Google

,----[ Quote ]
| "Forty percent of servers run Windows, 60 percent run Linux," he said. "How
| are we doing? Forty is less than 60, so I don't like it. ... We have some
| work to do."

Isn't Linux just UNIX under a different name?

,----[ Quote ]
| Yet, the bottom line is Linux is not UNIX. Make no mistake. Linux was not
| derived from the original program code and it is not subject to any UNIX
| licensing arrangement (some may say constraint.) In fact, Linux is not
| legally able to call itself UNIX (and incidentally, neither is BSD anymore.)
|
| No, despite the affection long-timers in the industry might have for UNIX
| there’s no denying Linux has taken on a life of its own and is driving modern
| development faster than any proprietary team. In a twist of fate, Linux poses
| a challenge to the mighty Microsoft whose server-based operating systems led
| pundits to question the viability of UNIX just two decades ago.
|
| Linux ain’t UNIX. And in fact Linux has left UNIX behind. The UNIX name has
| become bogged down with fragmented development and legal battles making it a
| shell of its former self. Linux is the new UNIX, it alone is the embodiment
| of the elegant design and hacker spirit that UNIX originally represented.
