Build It: A Sub-$250 Desktop PC

,----[ Quote ]
| Why spend more than you should on a cheap PC that you buy retail? In less
| than 30 minutes, you can build an ultra-low-budget Linux PC that can handle a
| multitude of everyday tasks.

How to save $400 or more on new computer software

,----[ Quote ]
| Check out the free, open-source Linux, a time-tested operating system used by
| large governments and companies. Linux comes in many flavors, but the ones
| you'll want to look at are Ubuntu (most robust, but more for the really techy
| folks) and Kubuntu (a somewhat easier-to-use version that is probably best
| for everyday users).

Weekend Project: VIA ARTiGO Pico-ITX Kit with Ubuntu

,----[ Quote ]
| The VIA ARTiGO, a Pico-ITX build kit from VIA, makes one ponder the
| possibilities of low power, small form-factor computing. The Artigo comes
| with just about everything you need to build an energy efficient computer
| based on the VIA C7 processor except a 2.5-inch hard drive (IDE for this
| version) and a DDR2 533MHz SO-DIMM memory stick (up to 1GB, with a
| recommended density of 2Rx16). I managed to purchase a 1GB stick on
| NewEgg.com for about $20 in order to prepare for several projects using the
| Artigo. These experiments will be featured in future articles here on Geek so
| watch for them in the months ahead!

Microsoft painted into a corner with low-cost laptops

,----[ Quote ]
| That leaves Microsoft executives with a choice: Do they extend the
| availability of Windows XP for low-cost laptops, or possibly concede this
| nascent market to Linux?
