The majority of memory leaks are caused by bugs in extensions. Firefox 3
with no extensions keeps its memory usage at constant levels even after
loading thousands of sites.
A while ago, I tested Firefox 3 (with extensions) along with Opera 9.5 and
Firefox 2. The test involved loading many sites in sucession while
measuring the CPU and memory usage. FF3 had the lowest memory usage by far
(~90% less than Opera). Opera had the lowest CPU usage (~20% less than
FF3).
It would be interesting to see the measurements for Chrome and Safari. Maybe
someday...
