Samsung NC20 - A Brief Encounter

,----[ Quote ]
| That was about all the time that I had with it. We installed a few more
| optional packages, and Mandriva certainly seemed to work just fine. Oh, also,
| as my friend has experience with Ubuntu and Linux Mint, I chose to install
| the Mandriva Gnome version, rather than KDE. Obviously there were no problems
| as a result of that, either.

Is there only one choice for the Linux newcomer?

,----[ Quote ]
| Meet Mandriva 2009 (One), a distro which states a similar level of “out of
| the box” compatibility as Ubuntu, but does it deliver?
|
| I decided to write this article to cover a topic that has been concerning me
| for a while.  Whilst Ubuntu is a great distro offering “out of the box”
| support, there is so much more to Linux and Linux != Ubuntu!  With that in
| mind Ive picked a distro which Ive dabbled with on occasion in the past, but
| since Heron 8.04 went on by second rig and Gentoo remains my distro of
| choice, I’d neglected the distro for a while.  I think (if i’m honest) theres
| are reason for this.

First Look: Chakra Project Alpha 2

,----[ Quote ]
| I’ve enjoyed my time looking at Chakra, and while it has many rough edges to
| iron out before an official release, I do think it’s potential is there for
| all to see. Arch is a great distribution and building on top of it like this
| makes perfect sense to me. I’m not sure exactly who Chakra is aimed at but it
| doesn’t seem to be new Linux users. They even say that on their website. I
| think for Arch users who like KDE it’s definitely worth a look, even in this
| early stage. Why not get involved and help them make it even better. Some
| knowledge of Arch is essential if you’re planning to get involved with
| Chakra. Having the backup of my Arch experience really helped me fix some
| teething problems. The liveCD works perfectly already, they just need to
| tweek the installer a little and they’ll be onto a winner. One thing is for
| sure, when they finally get a full release of Chakra ready for public
| consumption, I’ll be back to look at it. It’s one to keep your eye on I say.

A quick look at Mandriva 2009.1 Spring

,----[ Quote ]
| They say first love never dies, and I guess there is a degree of truth in
| that. Mandrake the predecessor of Mandriva was my first Linux, and despite
| the fact that over the years our ways parted, I have a sentiment for this
| distribution and I come back to it every now and again to check what’s new.
| This time round I decided to have a look the newest addition to Mandriva
| family; Madriva One 2009.1 Spring, boldly promising to bring the best of the
| latest cutting edge technology to your desktop. As promises go this is a big
| one, and after reading the release note on the Madriva website I wondered if
| this once probably the most popular distro is ready regain the leaser
| position.
|
| [...]
|
| The newest Mandriva is no doubt an excellent system, easy to configure and
| use, appealing visually and offering a very powerful system under the hood.

Mandriva 2009.1 Spring shows a lot of promise

,----[ Quote ]
| So if you are looking for some distro hopping I can warmly recommend to give
| the latest Mandriva a whirl - especially if you are looking for a KDE4 based
| solution, but their Gnome offer totally fine as well. You just might end up
| liking it.

Review - Mandriva 2009.1 (KDE edition)

,----[ Quote ]
| But could I use it full time? Almost certainly yes, and if I wasn’t very tied
| to Gnome and the Gnome libraries and applications then I’d consider making
| the switch.

Mandriva 2009.1

,----[ Quote ]
| This GNOME desktop was excellent, and it maintained the layout of the KDE
| menu, which is good for someone who wants to try both desktops out.

A quick look at Mandriva 2009.1 RC2

,----[ Quote ]
| The Live CD booted much faster than the previous versions. I did not time it
| but it was definitely faster. The boot screen also revealed new artwork which
| I like better than the one in Mandriva 2009. Apart from the looks, the system
| was as stable as any other Mandriva release.

Mandriva Linux: What Windows should be.

,----[ Quote ]
| For the last 15 or more years I have been waiting for Linux to be as user
| friendly as Windows. As more and more impressive software came out for
| windows, this grew stronger and stronger. Now, I am finally satisfied. I
| installed and instantly saw that my life was about to get easier. I spend
| about 16 hours a day coding and Googling. So, my operating system must be top
| notch. I also do not like to sit and type commands all day either. But with
| Mandriva 2009, I do not have to!
|
| It happens everytime my girlfriend goes to MySpace. She gets infected with
| malware, despite running Spybot SD and AVG. Great job, now I am going to have
| to clean her PC out again right? Wrong, I formatted the drive and installed
| Mandriva. She is now browsing safely and is having no problem using Linux. It
| is as easy as Windows now, but without the bullshit. Now, I do not complain
| that she is going to MySpace!
