I initially got interested in Linux after going to a computer club where someone was
giving a lecture on Linux. I purchased a book with a Redhat CD in the back and
was a Linux user ever since. I switched to Suse 5.x because it came with nice manuals
which were a very good teacher for me. I've tried most of the popular distributions
at various times but was a Suse user up until I tried Opensuse 11.1 and was
very disappointed. I did a little research and found Mepis 8 which has been working
nicely for me. The fact that Suse/Novell and Microsoft seem to be partners to some
degree bothers me as well. I've supported Microsoft enough over the years and
don't wish to support them anymore.
Anyway my point is that install fests and user groups are very good at doing grass roots
campaigning for Linux and should not be discounted as just some tech people sharing
war stories.
