ESEARCH that is focused on pattern recognition might soon be 'called for duty'. Character classification in particular appears to be the very basis for book scanning, archiving, and indexing. As it turns out today, Alexa's Internet Archive has begun an extensive book scanning operation. This follows the seminal initiative from Google Prints, which was very shortly afterwards followed by Microsoft.
